AKC's New Rules Policies andEffects of the New

The easy way is to do the "math". The ACEF after many years of trial and error with input from Breed Parent Clubs, had determined that 75 minutes per breed for both lecture and hands-on is sufficient time to cover the important aspects of their breed.

Let's look at the Hound Group with 23 breeds. In the past, 23 breeds would take 28 3/4 hours plus time for lunch and breaks. This gave you 2 component credits for each breed.

Now, to cover the entire Hound Group, and for you to receive the same breed credit, (2 component credits) it would take 57 1/2 hours plus time for lunch and breaks.

At the May 2007 AKC Board of Directors meeting and listed as Attachment B to the minutes is the New Rules Policies and Guidelines for Conformaiton Dog Show Judges. Every judge should know these. Click HERE for the 20 page pdf file.

AKC's New Institute Credits

The AKC instituted new criteria for obtaining component credits at "Seminars, Institutes, Judges Study Groups and Mentoring" effective April 1, 2006.

You can read the FINAL AKC Additional Breed Component Criteria on the AKC web site HERE.

Essentially the new criteria for each breed, gives one component credit for a 90 minute lecture "to include history, form and function of the breed, an in-depth consideration of the Standard and a question and answer period." If a "breed-specific hands-on "Workshop"" immediately follows the 90 minute lecture and lasts a minimum of 60 minutes, one additional component credit will be given.

UKC Standards Revision Overhall?

UPDATED

March 5, 2008

by Nina Sherrer

In 2004 a UKC Standards CD came out for a very reasonable fee. This listed all the current UKC Standards. As we know, standards never seem to be static and new breeds are always added. When talking to UKC, they indicated they would forward any new updates to those who had previously purchased the original 2004 UKC Standards CD. Did anyone receive an update?

Recently there have been many standard updates on the UKC web site. This looks as if a major overhall of the UKC Standards is taking place.

At the UKC June 2007 PREMIER show, a UKC Standards CD was made available, however, according to some who have purchased it, this CD seems as though it is not as complete as it could be. This leaves one to wonder about the UKC Standards and which ones to use when judging at UKC Shows.

HERE is an interesting Link concerning UKC Standard Revisions on the UKC Message Board.
